Newton’s rookie year in the NBA was a modest one— he averaged 0.4 points on 12.5% shooting in 2024-25 with the Pacers and Wolves. The 2024 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player has been much more impactful in the G League so far.
The NBA announced the participants for the 2026 Rising Stars challenge tonight. The G League roster features four current two-way contract players (Ron Harper Jr., David Jones Garcia, Alijah Martin and Tristen Newton) as well as one G League player (Sean East of the Salt Lake City Stars). Former two-way players Cam Spencer and Ajay Mitchell will be suiting up for Team Sophomore.
Houston has agreed to a two-way contract with Tristen Newton. Newton was a second-round pick in the 2024 draft and has been dominating the G League this season, averaging 26.7 points for the Iowa Wolves. Congrats, Tristen! To make room for Newton, the Rockets released Tyler Smith, another 2024 draftee who signed his deal in early December. Smith will likely draw interest from rebuilding teams across the league.
Tristen Newton had one of the best games of his life tonight. The former NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player erupted for 41 points, eight triples, six rebounds and nine assists in Iowa's G League Winter Showcase opener.
Minnesota has agreed to a two-way contract with Johnny Juzang, who balled out for the team in preseason. Congrats, Johnny! To make room for Juzang, they released second-year guard Tristen Newton, who played a very small role as a rookie.
